Austin Ordinance Requires Homeowners to Have an Energy Audit Completed Before Selling Home
A new ordinance requires Austin homeowners to have an energy audit completed on their home prior to selling it. The audit checks for any inefficiencies the home might have.

AUSTIN, TX, June 29, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Austin homeowners are now required to have an energy audit completed before selling their home. The City of Austin passed Ordinance No. 20081106-047, adding Chapters 6-7 to the City Code. The code applies to all residential properties that are within the city limits, are 10 years or older, and receive services from Austin Energy. If you have a house that is on the market for sale, you are now required to have an energy conservation and disclosure (ECAD) audit completed by a certified auditor prior to the sale of the property. Certain single-family homes that meet the following conditions are exempt from the audit requirement.

Green Collar Operations, a home energy efficiency company operating in Austin, Round Rock, Georgetown, Waco and San Antonio, conducts the mandatory ECAD audit before homeowners sell their home.

A reason often cited for requiring homeowners to have the audit completed before the sale of the property is to allow any potential buyers to be aware of inefficiencies in the home. From the results of the audit, the home buyer will know what home energy efficiency repairs they might want to complete after buying the home to reduce the cost of their monthly utility bill.
